As the festive season approaches in India, it’s a wonderful time to welcome new beginnings. And who better to usher them in than the beloved Ganesha? This year, I wanted to create a unique Ganesha idol using the fascinating concept of the golden ratio.

Ganesha — Golden Ratio

What You’ll Need:

  • Black marker
  • Mechanical pencil
  • Scissor
  • Two sheets of paper (white and a vibrant color of your choice)
  • Phi ruler (optional, but highly recommended)
  • Approximately 20 minutes

Golden Beginnings:

The Phi ruler is a fantastic tool for incorporating the golden ratio into your art. It has markings that guide you in creating a perfect golden spiral, adding a pleasing balance to your artwork.

Let’s Get Crafting:

  1. Mark the Canvas: Start by using the Phi ruler to mark the outline of a rectangle on your light-colored paper. This will be the canvas for your Ganesha.

2. Create the Golden Spiral (Optional): If you have a Phi ruler, this step becomes a breeze! Use its markings to create the golden spiral within the rectangle. This spiral will serve as a guide for shaping Ganesha’s head and trunk. If you don’t have a Phi ruler, you can freehand a basic spiral within the rectangle.

3. Cut the Paper Spiral: Using the Phi ruler or your freehand spiral as a guide, carefully cut out the spiral from the white paper.

4. Detailing the Face: Now, on the light-colored paper, use your creativity to cut out additional elements for Ganesha’s face. This could include crescent shapes for eyebrows, paper teeth, and a single large eye (traditionally, Ganesha has only one functional eye).

Add Detailing

5. Assemble the Masterpiece: Lay out the cutouts on the rectangular base, arranging them to form Ganesha’s head and trunk. Play around with the placement to achieve a balanced and appealing composition.

6. The Finishing Touches: Finally, use the black marker to outline the eyes and any other details you want to emphasize.

And Voila! Your stunning golden ratio Ganesha is complete! It’s a beautiful and unique way to celebrate the festive season and bring a touch of mathematical harmony into your home.
